The CambridgeWeb.Net Public E-library at
library.CambridgeWeb.Net is, today, a web
site that serves a purpose widely different from its original objective. In
1997 this web site was concieved as a single page of an unofficial City of
Cambridge (Ontario, Canada) Web Site. By late 1997 we were receiving so much
information from the Cambridge Galleries of Cambridge, Ontario, Canada that we
launched an entirely separate web site. The content soon outgrew the limited
space provided by the (then) hosting ISP so we moved to a new server. Shortly
after, we adopted new addresses for the entire family of Cambridge web sites
that we ran. By early 1988 our Cambridge URLs were consolidated under our own
domain name, galganov.net. This distinguished them, specifically, as
"Galganov" web sites. It was shortly following this that we were officially
recognized for our contribution to the community by promoting it through our
Internet presence.
These sites were revamped and, once again, they were viewed critically as
to how the resource could best be used. During early-mid 1998 the library sent
new book announcements for posting on this site, however, they made inclusion
of this information needlessly difficult so it was decided to drop this
feature entirely. By late 1999 this set of sites were already running under
their own domain (http://CambridgeWeb.Net) and the Cambridge Public Library
System launched its own web site. The library contacted this site to request
that it be shut down. Thought to the matter was given and it was decided to
take no action at that time since the web site carried no time-sensitive
information.
Nothing further was heard of the matter until the 10th of May, 2000 when a
lawer from Pavey Law, the city's lawyers, contacted site management to inform
them that we were expected to close all our (award winning) Cambridge
promotional work down. The Corporation of the City of Cambridge, under the
dubious leadership of a (seemingly not too bright) x-mayor Jane Brewer, had
"thrown in" with the Library. This unprecedented assault by community
representatives and employees on a business working to promote its own
community led to a meeting held about 2 weeks later where we ceeded on content
issues as it related to the Cambridge Public Library System. We did not,
however, agree to close any domain names since we believe that their claim of
confusing similarity is patently absurd.
So, on the 23rd of May, 2000, the unofficial Cambridge Public Library
System of Cambridge, Ontario, Canada was shut down to make way for a new
project, the CambridgeWeb.Net Public E-library - a truly public library
with the obvious features of a brick & mortar library (free reeding!)
and the advantages of this contemporary Electronic Literary Institution.
This site is now being redeveloped as a resource for bibliophiles and
creators of literature alike. You will find resources to help you publish your
literary efforts and resources such as this one to help you sell your
creations. If you love poetry or the classics or if you're just looking for
something that is not in your local library or bookstore, this is the
place to find it!
Happy reading & good luck publishing!
